"The Smudger" By Angeline Trevena : Book Review By April Grace

I was lucky enough to pick this up when the author, Angeline Trevena, attended our FIRE Book Tour Birmingham event, which was based at Martinaeu Gardens on Friday the 4th of October 2019. It’s the first book in a long time that I’ve read in one or two sittings, (I’m an avid reader but not the quickest), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a dystopian novel which branches on young adult to new adult fiction due to the young age of the characters, and the world-building is fascinating from start to finish. It’s set in a futuristic world where those who extract memories from people are known as traders, who are generally treated as outsiders because there are many who have been known to go rogue, ‘ripping’ memories from people without their permission. This premise immediately plays with themes of race and poverty, with this young character Kioto who learns she was abandoned as a child after her home city was destroyed in a massacre.

"Noughts & Crosses" Series By Malorie Blackman : Book Review By April Grace

One of my all-time favourite series is Malorie Blackman’s Noughts & Crosses series, starting with Noughts & Crosses, then its sequel is titled Knife Edge. The next books in the series are Checkmate, Double Cross and Crossfire which has only very recently been published and which I purchased at YALC (Young Adult Literature Convention) this year. I’m so glad I did, and I can’t wait to get into the worlds of the new characters Malorie has introduced.
